So, I rented movies the other night, but just as I was ready to put one on, I spotted one of my favorite action movies on my satellite tv from www.directstartv.com. Some people might not consider it an action movie, but when there are drug deals in industrial parks involving machine guns, shootouts in old factories, murders in abandoned buildings, and fist fights all over the place, I’m going to classify that as action.
The Departed has just as much drama as it does action, which makes it perfect. Having such great actors doesn’t hurt, either. The concept of a cop working undercover with the mob while a wannabe gangster works undercover with the police is genius.
What really grabs me about this movie is not the action, though. Don’t get me wrong, the action is great. But what was even better was Matt Damon’s character. To put it simply, he was so human. He had many flaws and they were clearly evident regardless of how hard he tried to hide them. Basically, he was a coward. For example, he knew that someone was sleeping with his girl yet he didn’t stand up to the guy. He also backed down from every challenge and was an underhanded rat. The crazy part is that you kind of still wanted to like the guy. Aside from the well-developed characters, this movie also had a very interesting ending. Check it out if you haven’t already.
